Description
This stamp commemorates the fifth anniversary of Tunisia's independence, obtained on March 20, 1956 after decades of struggle against the French protectorate. The show celebrates one of the major turning points in the country's modern history: the transition from a territory under foreign domination to a sovereign state, engaged in the construction of its political, social and economic institutions. The visual – a dove and a stylized human figure – symbolizes newfound freedom, peace and the aspiration for an autonomous future. In 1961, this anniversary took on particular importance because it marked the first years of consolidation of the Tunisian state, a period during which the authorities sought to affirm national identity and mobilize the population around the values of independence and development.
