Description
The Universal Postal Union (UPU)
is a specialized agency of the United Nations system. Its goal is to promote the proper development and cooperation of the different postal systems around the world.
First named the General Postal Union, it was the first international organization aimed at standardizing the different postal systems of the member countries. It was created on October 9, 1874, during the International Postal Conference in Bern, the capital of Switzerland. With its membership increasing significantly, it was renamed the Universal Postal Union in 1878.
The headquarters of the UPU is still in Bern. Its official language is French, English was added in 1994 as a working language. The international organization today has 192 member states.
