Description
The Audouin's Gull is a threatened seabird, endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, recognizable by its coral red beak with a black ring. A formerly very rare species, the Audouin's gull saw its population increase and settle at around 19,000 pairs in the 2000s. The colony in southern Portugal (near Faro) has experienced recent and dazzling development. But overall the population shows a slight decline, particularly in Spain, which has led the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) to classify it again as VU (Vulnerable) on a global scale (competition with the yellow-legged gull, accidental captures).
