Description
The Kasbah of Kef is an architectural jewel nestled at an altitude of more than 700 meters on the heights of Djbel Eddir, which dominates the town of Kef. Since its construction in 1600 under the Ottoman Empire, the citadel has long served as a defense tower against invasions and attacks on this strategic region in the northwest of the country. It underwent several transformations and restoration works during the different dynasties. Currently, this historic building hosts festivals and various cultural and artistic events in the region.

A huge wooden gate in the middle of a thick wall protects access to the interior. The interior is a historical fresco, with to the left of the entrance the remains of stored canons from the period. Opposite is a long corridor leading to large “Oudha” rooms. Some were used as weapons and ammunition depots, others used as kitchens and bedrooms and stewardships. This corridor ends on its right with a door opening onto a large courtyard used today to organize festivals and other cultural events which have seen artists from Tunisia and elsewhere take to the stage; as well as exhibitions of local and regional crafts. The covered part of the Kasbah, considered a defense tower, has an area of 2000 m2. The hill exceeds 5000 square meters.
