Description
This stamp testifies to Tunisia's participation in the vast international campaign launched by UNESCO to save the monuments of Nubia, threatened with engulfment by the waters of the Aswan High Dam in the early 1960s. The illustration, designed by the artist Hatem El Mekki, carries a symbolism of protection and rescue: hands emerging from the waves support an ancient building, representing the collective effort of humanity to preserve its heritage against irreversible consequences of technical progress. In the Tunisian context, this program highlights the country's anchoring in Arab-African cultural solidarity and its early commitment to the conservation of the treasures of universal history. The message conveyed is that of a modern nation which, while looking to the future, recognizes the inestimable value of the roots of civilization and joins in the dialogue of cultures to prevent the erasure of global memory.
