The first crossing of the Sahara on self-tracks,
launched by André Citroën on December 17, 1922, was a successful historic expedition linking Algeria to Timbuktu in 21 days. Equipped with Kégresse tracks, these cars proved the feasibility of motorized transport in the desert, opening the way to Saharan exploration.
The mission, led by Georges-Marie Haardt and Louis Audouin-Dubreuil, left Touggourt (Algeria) on December 17, 1922 to reach Timbuktu, Mali, via the Grand Erg.
Impact: This 3,200 km raid had a worldwide impact and put an end to the isolation of the heart of Africa, opening the way for other expeditions such as the Black Cruise.
